Higher shelter costs accounted for two-thirds of the increase in the consumer-price index in January. But it's a finicky number and not the best way to gauge the trend in U.S. inflation. More alarming was the 0.9% increase in the so-called supercore rate of inflation. It was the biggest uptick since April 2022.
